Module Eleven: Collaboration

Collaboration is the practice of working together across roles and teams to achieve a common goal. The Unity pillar reminds us that success depends on commitment to the larger group, and collaboration helps us understand what we owe, not only to the outcome, but to each other. This sense of shared responsibility is foundational to operational discipline, because when people understand what excellence looks like and see their role in achieving it, they're better equipped to succeed.

Collaboration also helps address a challenge many organizations are facing: employees feeling disconnected from their roles and coworkers. Gallup’s 2026 State of the Global Workplace report found that only 20% of employees worldwide were engaged in 2025. Another 64% were not engaged, and 16% were actively disengaged. Gallup also estimated that low engagement costs the global economy $10 trillion in lost productivity.

Focusing on collaboration can help leaders respond to this challenge. When people understand the organization's goal and can see how and why their contributions matter, they're more likely to feel valued and engaged. Collaboration gives leaders a practical way to create that understanding by strengthening communication, clarifying expectations, and connecting individual work to something larger.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Gallup's teamwork research identifies five elements that distinguish high-performing teams from others: common purpose, connection, communication, collaboration, and celebration. Common purpose gives people a shared reason for the goal; connection helps build trust; communication keeps expectations clear; and celebration reinforces the behaviors teams need to repeat. Collaboration ties all of these together, giving teams a way to draw on each other's strengths toward the best possible outcome.

This module includes three lessons on Collaboration and team unity: Success Through Collaboration focuses on clear goals, shared expectations, and team communication; Strategic Collaboration: Stronger Together explores how leaders can leverage strengths to improve outcomes; One Operation, One Team ties collaboration to Unity through shared identity, collective safety, and pride in the operation. Let’s get started!
