Module Four: Prioritization

Prioritization is one of the most practical skills a leader can develop, yet also one of the most difficult to sustain. In any hectic environment, the number of tasks, requests, and demands will always exceed the time and energy available. Leaders who learn to distinguish between what truly drives outcomes and what only appears urgent are better equipped to make informed decisions, protect resources, and guide their teams with consistency.

The demands of leadership will always test your focus. Resiliency is what allows you to recover your energy, redirect your attention, and stay centered on the work that matters most. At 3M Chem Ops, this balance is vital for keeping operations safe and consistent, even when pressure is high. Leaders who practice resiliency through prioritization show their teams that clarity is possible in the middle of competing demands.

If we make everything important, then we deplete our energy and ability to focus on the truly significant things in our lives.
— Larry Little

This module introduces three key practices of effective prioritization: Leading Ourselves with Intention, Knowing What Really Matters, and Balancing People and Processes. Each practice builds on the other, from developing personal habits, to making sound decisions under pressure, to finding balance between the needs of people and the requirements of production. Together, they form a practical approach to prioritization that supports both safe operations and strong leadership.

With the right focus and habits, leaders can manage competing demands without losing sight of safety, people, or performance. Let’s get started!
